The Masterplan for the Millennium Mills Site (Slide 1) represents the general layout of building types, with a residential-dominated area on the right and heritage and services on the left. Our vision is focused on adaptability, therefore although some indications of use are included many of the buildings will have the potential to change their function if needed thanks to their robust design.

The site will be connected by a network of roads, cycle and pedestrian lanes to allow access for all means of mobility. Parking will be provided for residents who need to use private vehicles and disabled parking will increase the site's accessibility.

CONTEXTUAL VIEWS

Images below show that there are no adverse impacts on the local views considering the scale and height of the buildings. Building heights are also responding to the near proximity of the London City Airport.

DESIGN IN MORE DETAIL

OFFICE, EDUCATION & TRAINING

There will be a number of robust office spaces available on the site, following the organically shaped design of the After-School Care Centre in Berlin, Germany (MONO Architekten). These buildings will be suitable to use as educational facilities (eg. for the East London University), offices, co-working spaces, training facilities etc. depending on the demand and needs of the community.

BUSINESS INDEPENDENCE

A number of container-like buildings will be placed alongside the river edge. These will be available for rent to small businesses, artists, entrepreneurs and others. They will allow for the growth of people just starting their business or with a lower threshold and will help to make the area more diverse and interesting. Spaces can also be used as small-scale homes for rent if desirable or spaces for art exhibitions.

HIGH STREET

Addressing the need for a true high street expressed by the residents the new development will link the two heritage buildings to create a robust and vibrant walkable link. This will follow the idea of an urban 'living room' with permanent and movable furniture, movable flower pots, playground activities and so on. It will encourage people to stay and create opportunities for them to meet other members of the community. A sense of place will be created through Millennium Mills and Silo D 'bookending' the pedestrian link and providing a historic backdrop to the space.

COMMUNITY NEEDS

One of the three most needed services expressed by the community has been a supermarket. Locating it next to the North Woolwich Road will allow easy access. The building accommodating the supermarket will also have a small leisure centre, like the one Copenhagen's House of Culture in Movement, where parents can bring their children while shopping or come there at any given time. A lounge area with coffee and food will also be available for parents and children tired after playtime.
